Brexit: Boris Johnson says ‘anti-democratic’ backstop must be scrapped

Boris Johnson has told the EU the Irish border backstop must be scrapped as it is “unviable” and “anti-democratic”. In a letter to European Council President Donald Tusk, the PM also said the backstop risked undermining the Northern Irish peace process.

A highly revisionist statement from Johnson there. Most of the rest of us were under the impression the intention of the backstop was to protect the Northern Irish peace process not undermine it. Johnson is the one working hardest to undermine it.

But then he has changed his position so many times, it must be difficult to keep up with reality, poor dear. Or maybe to him, reality, objective truth is something infinitely malleable, merely to serve the current message.

However, Labour pointed out that Mr Johnson actually voted for Mrs May’s deal - including the backstop - when it came before Parliament for a third time in March.

Once we claimed he was a remainer. Once he voted in favour of the backstop. Who would trust this chameleon?
